FAQ
What is the difference between a Celebrant and a Registrar?
A celebrant is someone who will work alongside you and guide you through the creation process of your wedding ceremony. Together you will work on beautiful ideas and get to know one another, eventually resulting in a bespoke and personal ceremony that reflects you as a couple and your dreams for the future. There are no rules and no boundaries.
A registrar conducts the legal aspects of your marriage. A ceremony conducted by a registrar must be held in a licensed venue using contractual wording. Any form of religion is not allowed in a Civil Ceremony.
Can a Celebrant conduct a legally binding ceremony?
At present, in England and Wales, the law states that Celebrants cannot conduct legally binding wedding ceremonies. This is easily rectified however by getting the legal stuff done first at your local Registrar’s office, in a simple 2+2 ceremony. This is a Ceremony where you and your partner attend the office with two witnesses, make the basic statutory declarations and sign your marriage certificate. (Scotland and Ireland have different legal procedures). If the Registrar’s office try to persuade you to have more than the basic statutory registration, remind them of your right to have the 2+2 ceremony.
You can then work with your Celebrant to create a ceremony which is a true celebration of you as a couple, rather than a service where the focus is on the legal status of marriage, with some generic vows.
With a Celebrant led wedding the ceremony will be as you want it, at the time and place of your choosing, with beautiful and personal vows.
What is the difference between a Humanist Celebrant and an Independent or Civil Celebrant?
The main difference is the level of religious content. A humanist ceremony does not include any religious content at all. With a Celebrant the choice is yours - you can include or exclude religious elements.
Often couples with different beliefs or traditions find a Celebrant led Wedding the perfect way to incorporate aspects of both and create a ceremony which blends them together and unites them.
Other than delivering the service, what else will you do for us as our Celebrant?
Firstly I meet with you to discuss your very special Ceremony. We’ll discuss what kind of ceremony you want, what you’d like included, if there are any symbolic rituals you’d like, or if there is a theme.
If this is a Wedding or Vow Renewal I will ask you both a little bit about your story - how you met, what you love about each other and what makes you laugh about each other. I want to get to know you a little so I can write a beautiful ceremony that truly reflects you and your partner. I can write Vows for you for your approval, or I can help you create your own.
You will be provided with a draft of the written service and we can continue to edit and make changes as you see fit. I will be there for you in the run up to your special day, keeping in touch with you, making changes to the service where you want them, meeting with you either face to face or via video link, providing email and phone support and providing as much help and advice as I possibly can.
Will we have a Wedding Rehearsal?
Yes, of course! A rehearsal is automatically included in the package.
It can really help reduce any nerves you might have and help you relax on the day. It is also a good time to sort out any last minute queries.
Can we include any symbolism in our ceremony?
Absolutely - I will work with you to find the perfect symbolic element. From Handfasting to Ring Warming, Jumping the Broom to The Loving Cup.
There are so many beautiful elements to choose from and there are many ways to include them in a ceremony.
Can we include Pets?
Pets are often a much-loved and important member of the family, so I am always happy to include them. I’d always want to chat with you first about their temperament and that they’d be comfortable, and then we can look at ways they could be involved. You would also have to gain permission from the venue to have animals present.
